Spring Rescue
May 23,2013. Monterey ,California. It has been a while since I last participated in
a heartpounding rescue of Steelheads trapped within an almost unhabitable pool of water
within the Carmel river. Specifically beneath the Millorca bridge.
It was around Four in the afternoon of May 19, 2013 that we heard about an emergency
call from a CRSA member who was patrolling with a federal warden along the river that day. They
spotted at least Two pieces of an adult Steelhead measuring approximately 32 inches
long. The species were actually dead lying at the riverbank near the rescue site.
Where at least six adult Steelheads more were nearly endanger of surviving if not rescued
immediately.
With the help of Brian Leneve,Roy Thomas,Roy Torres (federal warden) Frank Emerson and me,
right away we started to rescue the remaining Six adult Steelheads measuring approximately
from 22 inches to 32 inches long. All Six were rescued within a Two and a half hours elapsed
time. The species were finally released at the ocean facing the Carmel beach at around
Six Thirty in the evening of the same date.
Thank you for now.Till your next visit.

Hermanas Mayores 2012
September 22,2012.Quezon City,Philippines.
The 320th Fiesta Celebration for Our Lady's Nativity in Calbayog City,Philippines
on September 8,2012 has been a fruitful year for Calbayognons especially for the
family of this year's Hermanas Mayores; Maria Myrra Querol Emerson,Maria Oledan Querol and Lucia Oledan Querol respectively.
First, I would like to tell you something about Maria Oledan Querol.Aside from being
a mother to us Eleven children from our late father Paulino Querol Sr, my mother is a
grandchild of the late Placido Rama of Cebu.
Her being deeply religious is precisely because of her upbringing taught by her
elders who were once connected with Calbayog diocese since the early 1900's.
The late Placido, inspite of his good fortune in Cebu, migrated to Calbayog thru
the help of Spanish priest assigned to Calbayog by the Archdiocese of Cebu.
Since then, he became the first Calbayog Catholic Cemetery Administrator,Altar assistant to the Spanish priests saying masses in Latin at the Three altars of
the Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral in it's early years.
Not only that he assisted the priests in saying masses in Latin but he was also
being tasked as the chief cook for the Bishop's palace for decades until his
death in Nineteen Forty Seven(1947).
He relinquished his tasks being an eldest son of his family
in favor of being an assistant and cook to the priests of the
Diocese of Calbayog.
That's how deeply religious he was.And he succeeded in teaching his Three daughters
and finally his First granddaughter in the person of Maria Rama Oledan Querol.
The next hermana is Maria Myrra Querol Emerson. She is the Third child among the
Eleven children of Maria Rama Oledan Querol. Like her mother she also got
a blood of a deeply religious family. She lives now in Monterey,California,USA with
her husband Frank Tours Emerson who himself has a brother priest serving in the United Kingdom.
Lastly ,Lucia Oledan Querol is the Fifth among the Eleven children
of Maria Rama Oledan Querol. She is single and now lives in Vancouver,British Columbia,Canada.
In behalf of our family ,I would like to say thank you for all Calbayognons
who in one way or the other helped make this year's celebrations a more
meaningful and joyful to all of us.

A Representative
January 30,2012.Banning, California.
Since I started to write on this blog,I keep reminding myself
to feature no political figures or make at least a hint
related to politics. This blog is solely intended for small
ideas on my experiences related to universal themes such as;
leisure and places I had visited or environmental issues
that I love to advocate and something that will cater to all
irrespective of place in society or range of ages who would
wander to my web.
But today, kindly allow me to tell you something out of my
original genre to honor someone who is a friend to me since
my childhood. This guy happens to be my former classmate in
grade II. In my recollection of him, oftentimes in that era
in late Sixties,I can still remember a schoolmate, classmate
and a seatmate who was kind and generous.
Being a son of a city engineer at that time one could tell
that he was way ahead of us who were not so blessed with
a family having a good resources like money.
But still,he kept his manners and like most of us in his
class he acted as if he was just an ordinary kid like us.
While his mom was working at the same school that we attended
as a librarian, I can still recall today how grateful we are
that at that times when we were eating our snacks during recess
she would tell us to read books at a time.
For grade II elementary students like we were it was
really a big break to tinker, hold and read large books like
World Atlas,Encyclopaedia,Almanacs and so forth that
were available in our school aided by the USAID.
Forty two years later to be exact,we were at (Rick Torrijas)
a common friend's house in San Diego,California eating
and recollecting our journeys in life that made him to
represent our Ist district in Samar that made possible his
current U.S.A. visit in his capacity as a member of the
Philippine Congress' Defense,Disaster and Rehabilitation
and lastly in the most powerful Appropriations
Committee of the Lower house.
Good for you I told him and please continue to work for our
city of Calbayog and for Samar and the Philippines as a whole.
He advocated the implementation of Clean Air Act in Calbayog.
I felt elated to learn that my hometown is now upholding the
Global law that most of my former co-workers at Haribon
advocated so long a time in the early 1990's who collaborated
for the drafting, advocating, lobbying in the halls of the
United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) under the
leadership of our former Environmental Lawyers (ELAW).
For which in 1992 A World Treaty on Environmental Protection
was signed into law by no less than Twenty One heads of state
in Rio de Janeiro,Brazil's "World Summit for the Environment
Protection" on April 22,1992.
Lastly, I am hoping that Congressman Mel Sarmiento will deliver
his part of the Bacon for what he is now attending in his
current official visit to the United States as a Representative
of our Ist district in Samar or Calbayog in particular.
Kudos to you.

Thanksgiving 2011
Banning,California.November 24,2011.
It has been Three years that we were at the Morongo Barnyard
every time November comes. But this year, the Morongo Indians
opted to let those who wanted a free Turkey to just go and
picked their share at the Morongo Casino parking lot on
November 19,2011.
It might be a sign of hardtimes for the organizers since
they encouraged an exchange of Turkey with at least
Five canned goods.
When years before, they were giving Turkeys for free and
dry goods to the same people who were making lines at
the Barnyard.
That is why most were discouraged to appear on that day,
thinking that they might not be able to get something.
Just the same,Thanksgiving day has to be celebrated and
will continue to signify a cherished day for every
family to thank the good Lord for all the blessings
each family member received during the year and to share
it with those who mostly needed them.
Till then ,Happy Thanksgiving to all of us!

Calbayog Fiesta 2011
September 8,2011.Banning,California,U.S.A.
Paying homage to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
St.Anne seated,carrying a child on her lap.
Wearing royal blue robes and white necklines.
This image reminds us; faithful, parishioner and
particularly those who were born in Calbayog City,
where the ever enduring faith and devotion to the
Blessed Virgen Mary is beyond question.
In line with this, please allow me to express a wish
by asking our beloved friends and organizers to humbly
maintain and adhere to the original image by maintaining
the royal blue robes of St. Anne and the white clothing
for the infant Mary on her lap.
We are supposed to keep the traditional image everlasting
and not evolving.
Relative to this,I commend the Calbayognons in San Diego,
California for maintaining a replica (truly totally similar)
to that at the altar in Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral
in Calbayog City.
After all it is only faith, humility and simplicity
that the Blessed Virgen wants us to emulate aside from
praying the holy rosary as often as possible.
Faithfulness to the image must be adhered to avoid things
that mislead the eyes and faith of Calbayognons who are
used to witness it in it's original color and form.
Furthermore, seeing the replica image in San Diego,California
is just like adoring it before her majestic altar in the
Sts.Peter and Paul Cathedral in Calbayog.
Unmistakably beautiful that brings back childhood memories
of our humble beginnings and triggers a shiver on our feet
to prepare a flight heading back home.
Happy Fiesta to all of us.

Industrial Disaster
Banning,California.March 16,2011.
Since the start of industrialization just after World War II in the
early 1950's and mid 1960's,countries around the world kept dreaming
and continued to research on how to make an alternative sources of
energy that will outgrow the need to buy expensive crude oil from
the Middle Eastern countries that practically dictate prices thereof.
One among them is Japan.Through the years they developed a
sustainable energy device by designing and maintaining nuclear
reactor plants that boasted their supremacy in manufacturing
automobiles and enjoyed a stable and continued supply of
electricity and water.
Thus, earning them the symbol of power in the whole of Asia
and the rest of the industrialized world.Without noticing the
future impact of natural calamities such as an 8.9 magnitude
earthquake can cause trouble to the physical structures of the
reactors and the whole system of the nuclear plant itself.
Much more when a Ten meter tsunami comes along as what had
happened last Friday March 11,2011.
Twenty years,Forty years maybe too long a time to ignore
a possible risk of malfunction or simply to dispose off of
used rods and it's storage to see to it that it will not cause
harm to humans.
Eventually today as the whole world is watching and praying
for quicker resolution of a possible meltdown in Japan, the
rest of the humanity are risking patience, anxiety and fear
for their lives and that of their love ones who might get
exposed to harmful radiation.
Maybe now is a right time for other countries to contemplate
on reviewing and maybe set aside or reversing their desires
for developing harmful nuclear reactor plants to lessen the
burden of ordinary human beings who wanted just to live a
peaceful and healthy lifestyle.
This tragedy could be a lesson to all that ultimate desire
of earning too much money is useless when the price of doing it
is risking human lives. Where its citizens can no longer afford
to drink a clean glass of water and eat safe uncontaminated food.
To our well loved friends in Japan,I would like to extend my
deepest sympathy and condolences.

New Year 2011
As we ushered in the year 2011,news around the United States unveiled a vast concern about blizzard hitting the east coast, halting airplanes to take off and land at certain airports in cities affected by the snowstorm.
Stranded passengers were caught in planes without or limited amount of food, made some of their relatives worried and asking "when are they going to disembark their seats for a much comfortable couches or beds at their respective homes?"
Meanwhile, in Southern California, particularly the San Bernardino National
Park and Forest Falls, turned haven among visitors and campers who wanted to experience a winter getaway for the remainder of holiday season by enjoying snow boarding and by simply sitting on top of huge snow balls while the kids are mastering to mold the appreciative snow man standing
beside them. With $5.00 parking fee, every one can enjoy this natural wonder
within reach.
Happy New Year.Till then,

An apology
Banning,California.August 26,2010.It has been a tragic and hurting to each
one of us who had witness the tragedy that unfolded in Manila last Monday
August 23,2010.
Nobody in his right mind will ever do the same thing to an innocent and much
more to well wished tourists coming from a friendly neighbor like Hongkong.
To the people of Hongkong kindly accept my country's apology and assurances
to investigate and patiently cooperate with your government and people.
As a citizen of the Philippines,I would like to share my grief to the
families and friends of victims. For the dead, may they rest in peace.

A Milestone
Banning,California. Gone are the days when the Filipinos have to wait for weeks to declare newly elected winners in election times.
A President can be elected now and in less than two days can already be declared a winner.
Automation is indeed a phenomenal exercise, that guarantees effective and efficient results.Doubtful and non-believers even at the last days of waiting for the machine
test runs were speculating of failure but fortunately it turned out to be a very
reliable and successful undertaking.
Maybe now is the right time to congratulate each and every one who contributed for
the success of this historic exercise. To the future generations, surely this event
will be remembered as a legacy and a tool to guide them in the succeeding years to
follow.
A new weapon to unite the country.
An archipelago of 7,100 islands can now be listed as one among a group of countries
around the globe who are keeping elections as a less worrying and clean.
Till your next visit thank you.

Winter wonderland
At the foot of San Bernardino mountains along freeway 10 East, lies the unexplored
jewel of Banning.
The Highland Springs resort is one among the most blessed recipients of a four consecutive winter storms that recently visited Southern California.
Along with Big Bear and Yucaipa Valley, its surrounding cottages and outdoor recreational facility were covered with a two to four inches of snow that made it a real winter wonderland after Christmas this year.
Some said its better late than never.
Snowfall is very much anticipated since the start of December 2009 but unfortunately
it only came in late January 2010.
Till then bye.

A Letter
October 5,1999,Manila,Philippines.A decade ago today when I first set foot in America.I can still vividly recall the mob in front of the United States Embassy in Manila.Group of people who were manning the place to get a slot for a day's allotted hopefuls for very scarce number of Visas granted to applicants.
Me for one,was able to make into the first hundred people permitted to be interviewed
that day.But I was so unlucky not to get one and was turned down even before I was able to say something.
That experience made me more hopeful and resolved to try again.
This time I made a different approach.I wrote a letter addressed to the Ambassador and in it,explained clearly my intentions and telling him at the same time that his Consul had previously declined my application.
A week later,I was on my daily routine audit in Cebu when I heard the good news.
It was a phone call from our head office secretary asking me if I could return a call to the office of then ambassador Thomas Hubbard.
So I did call his office and bluntly replied that "I am still interested to travel."
He said come to the Embassy then.
In Two days time I was again inside the Embassy.
I was so amazed that the same consul who declined my application was there in an empty cubicle waiting for me.He too was amazed to see me for the
second time around.
He then started the conversation by asking me "how did I know about the Ambassador?".
I replied to him about several years ago when I was at Haribon Foundation. Being an auditor for the Ist Debt-for-nature swap program by USAID in
collaboration with Haribon.
Finally he said sorry and handed me a Ten year multiple entry Visa.
And the rest is history.
The story that I am sharing to you right now is my way of showing appreciation to a very respectable man who had crossed my path and
trusted me all along and showed his humility by reaching out and
answered my letter in my favor.
To the good Ambassador ,where ever you are,Thank you very much.

Brush Fires
Banning California.September 1,2009.As I am writing today, brush fires are still
ravaging portions of California mountains.
From the North near the capital city of Sacramento and to the South within a 15 minutes drive from downtown Los Angeles and to the East at Oak Glen near our very own backyard we could see the smoke covering the sky. September is suppose to be the end of summer season in the West and we are anticipating a high degree of humidity.Almost every day we are prompted with blistering heat of the sun.
The weather is so troubling that most older citizens here are commenting that they did not experience it in the past several years.
This phenomenon is a natural occurrence all we need to do is to keep alerted and be
mindful of anything, like matches, lighted cigarettes that might trigger a fire on dried grasses on an unexpected time of the day.Specially on those who are camping and exploring the parks and open spaces or rest areas. Till then bye

Meteor Shower
Banning California,August 12,2009.As we anticipated the peak of this year's natural
fireworks tonight,as predicted by astronomers,me for one was not able to sleep early
last night due to my urge to witness at least a single shooting star reveal before my eyes and kept open our windows while in bed.But unfortunately, I was not able to see
one before I found myself drowsy and falling asleep.
Fireworks every 4Th of July is a must see event in all American communities.
Tonight is a much more awesome and wonderful event as real and natural fireworks in
the sky would reveal before our eyes and maybe each one will have an opportunity to
utter a wish as fast as he could to make it come true.

Manila
April 7,2009.Manila ,Philippines.Barely Three days ago, we were in Las Vegas ,Nevada
for our annual retreat from the frosty weather in Banning, California.
Las Vegas being the center of entertainment and the games of chances, always draw a
lot of people all over the world. At the Monte Carlo Casino for instance a magic show
by Lance Burton, attracted both the kids and their respective parents-guardians.
Outside the main entrance of Bellagio resort facing the strip,a thousand people gathered to see the spectacular show of water combined with colors and music for the entertainment of every one watching.
A day after, our group decided to leave and rushed back to California and onward to
Tom Bradley International airport to catch my flight for Manila via Seoul,in South
Korea.
I arrived in Seoul after 13 long hours and another three hours more to reach Manila
where am now. A month of anticipated stay here, might help me see the places outside
the urban center where the usual traffic is so tiring. Not to mention the crowded
malls and streets. But this is what Manila is known to be.People.A melting pot in
Southeast Asia.A warm place for people who wanted change either in food or lifestyles.Manila being a trendsetter for food taste and clothing and even cosmetics.
So come aboard and help me enjoy.Till then

malls and streets. But this is what Manila is known to be.People.A melting pot in
Southeast Asia.A warm place for people who wanted change either in food or lifestyles.Manila being a trendsetter for food taste and clothing and even cosmetics.
So come aboard and help me enjoy.Till then

Sun-reflector
March 10,2009.I read on a news item that says and I quote,"Heavy Snow driven by wind
gusting to 40mph brought parts of the upper Midwest to a halt Tuesday, closing courts, schools, businesses and a major highway. In Fargo ND."Unquote.
This item reminds me of an incident completely opposite to the news item in the
Philippines,in Southeast Asia, where a cop was rushed to a nearby hospital in downtown
Manila for treatment of Heat-stroke due to exposure to a 34 degrees Celsius heat and
humidity.Extremely different occurrences at the opposing sides of our Globe.
But in approximately the same time of the day, week, month and year.Snow on the one side and heat on the other.
When I was Ten years old in the early Seventies, being a child, was afraid to go near
a forest thinking that if I get lost and no one will ever see and notice me,how could
I get out?,then I was thinking maybe its good to have an old milk can without a string which I could use to call someone for help.
After Twenty years,Cellular and wireless phones became handy assisting us whenever
we need to call anyone. In the same token, maybe another Twenty years from now,we will
be able to see a Sun-reflector to divert a Sun ray from the opposite side of the
Earth and use it to melt the Snow on the other side of the planet. How we can do it?
Kindly help me think about it.Till then.

Trend of time
As we are coping to survive the difficulties brought about by the ongoing economic
downturns, people from all walks of life struggle firmly by finding some alternative
activities to divert their maladies into possible opportunities.
Some are still hoping for a year or two to see a positive result. But most are
just standing bye and believing that somehow they might be luckier if they will try in lotteries and slot machines in casino houses.
In Southern California alone, casino becomes a sanctuary of people who wanted to
earn easy money. But most of the time these same people got into the bottom of debts
for losing their money on gambling activities.
More and more flyer's are being disposed and mailed at homes to lure them come and play for a free slot dollars, but eventually they end up losing substantial amount
to sustain their families' needs.
In a way, yes, to go out for a while and enjoy a bit to play the slot machines.
Maybe it helps generate employment for restaurants and other casino personnel. But we must be extra careful not to become victims of irresponsible gambling.

Economic Turnaround
When the state of economy is in Recession,we are faced with job laid offs.Less market
activity and less factory and machines hours utilization. Sometimes, businesses tend to operate only on a break-even capacity. That is underproduction.
That is only to survive. In Recession, the economic wheel is pinned hard to the ground. All we need to do is a little patience to push that wheel even on a slow
but precise movement to derail it from its present state.
Infrastructures financed by respective Governments are a little bit helpful at this time.Unemployment maybe lessened by taking in those jobless bodies dropped by the
private enterprises that had gone to bankruptcy and closure. On the other hand,
Recession is not so bad in itself. Its just a passage of a natural and defined state of an economic cycle. It could be long and agonizing to others but for those who had
in the past several years saved something, its the good time to invest on properties and real estates. Why? ,the answer is clear. Current prices of real estates are super low that eventually will balloon as the economy regained its state.
Thinking positive is the best antidote for Recession, try to compare the prices of gasoline four months ago.The highest average cost per gallon was $4.15 as compared today as $1.89. There maybe a lighter and shorter path ahead of it.It could be gone
next year. Keep hoping and that is for the better.
Thank you for visiting. Bye.Till then.

Battling the Economy
It is almost a common knowledge to every consumer and concern citizen that now-a days we are prompted with so much trouble on how to cope up with high prices of basic commodities and services that each one of us need to acquire in order to sustain life and its support services.
While thinking about it,I am reminded of the
basic law of Supply and Demand. It says that when the supply is plenty and the demand is low, prices of commodities tend to go down. But, when the demand is high and the supply of commodities is low then prices thereof tend to go up.
One of the many factors that affect that basic law is population. Some countries particularly in Asia
where I came from seldom check on the continuing increase of people that makes part of the consuming public.
Likewise, production tend to be very slow in some other ways
because materials need to be secured most of the time from foreign countries.
We tend to appreciate buying things from outer sources rather than procuring from local industries.
People has develop a habit of letting other people make for things that we want to own or buy for consumption. In America for instance, it is a common sight for every home to find things like toothbrush, slippers, pillows, bedsheets, toys for the kids that are made outside of America.
In the olden times people from my country usually aspire to buy things from the United States of America, but today as I compare the urge of people here buying for things made in China is really a surprise for me.
Maybe it is a human weakness to appreciate other peoples things rather than patronizing our own produce. In a way maybe its good for the sake of globalization.
World trade. But in the long run,it tends to derail the economy of the weak countries. Thus, contribute to that country's economic imbalance.
A good example of this is what is happening today. A slight weakness in the Wall street trading makes the whole world financially uncertain.
That means countries around the globe will never stand when American economy is in trouble.Countries should start to rethink and re focus on developing on its own resources to withstand the rage of economic collapse.

Trout Rescue
It was Saturday,July 26,2008.At the Carmel River in Monterey
county,we started the rescue for the Trouts caught up by a
drought in the upper portion of the river to make sure that
they will survive the continuing decline of water level in
the said area.
Summertime is fast approaching and water is starting to drain
a large section of the Carmel River down to the point where
the fresh water meets the salty water from the Pacific ocean
facing the Monterey peninsula in Northern California.
Seven o'clock in the morning ,the rescue team composed of two
females and six males members and volunteers threw our nets
and catches almost fifteen hundred of the said species for
barely two and a half hours span of work.
We collected them in a temperature controlled buckets
and carefully transported them to the lower section of
the River to make sure that a high percentage of survival
will be attained within the summer season until such time
that rain comes out later in spring and make the river
collect again a substantial amount of rainwater to sustain
a positive growth of nutrients needed by the Trouts as they
keep growing in the fresh waters before they are able to
sustain a life in the salty waters of the open seas.
The work of rescuing such species gave us a self
gratification aside from the value of exercising our
bodies for the sake of letting to continue and enjoy
the species life cycle which is laying their eggs at
the fresh waters and grow a little strength to prepare
themselves a more challenging life in the salty waters
of the oceans.
For the people behind the rescue, thank you so much.

Nest-2
"Am sure they don't anymore sneak or come back at night to their old nest."
Barely fifteen days ago, four little birds were hatched and raised up in
this bird's nest.It was empty the last time I saw four of them jumping and
making striking sounds on top of a Pine tree branch nearby.
But now, as I ventured once again to look for the nest,am surprised to see
four newly laid eggs inside of it.The nest looked refurbished as if it's
a new one.
Perhaps, as I was thinking of an old family coming back at night, I felt
wrong to learn that a new mother to be bird was looking and is occupying
the said nest at hand.
Same as humans, maybe birds are also on the look-out for nest to be vacated,
rebuild and then occupied as it is.
Maybe they also have entrepreneurs and advertisers who can easily identify
newly build or slightly used nest to their prospective clients or nest buyers.
Depending on nest availability and good location.
Like humans, birds maybe open-minded in getting furnished or semi-furnished nest.
Depending further on their social standing in the birds world. If ever they do,
I am thinking to suggest if someone will build ready-to-occupy nest and sell
it to future bird buyers.Or, will it be possible and profitable for us to build
nests and make reservations to prospective birds buying for them? Kindly help me
think about it. Till then...
